Performance @ The Center for Spiritual Living, Sunday, May 5th

The Center for Spiritual Living -DC was born in April 2009 as residents in the DC area interested in new thought ideas started to meet at locations near the Takoma metro stop. The Center for Spiritual Living is incorporated in Washington, DC, as a nonprofit organization. I have performed for the past five years at Centers for Spiritual Living in the DC metro area (there is a center in Fairfax, VA, too) and love the inviting atmosphere that promotes fellowship and reverence of the love concept.

My friend Angela Shaw who served as Assistant Director on the set of my stage play Running: AMOK in 2010 is music coordinator at the Center for Spiritual Living of DC and invited me a few months ago to perform for the first time at the DC center and I performed my single “Unbound” that I wrote in December following the passing of my friend Derrick “D. Marq” Smith. The song helped me heal by speaking to the process that happens when we lose faith and then regain our footing. I loved sharing my song with this wonderful congregation led by Reverend Alex Escudero, I was invited back last month, and this time I wanted to include the congregation in creating the song I would perform.

I had members of the congregation proceed through a visioning process to identify words associated with the idea of spring and rebirth (this was the first weekend of Spring). With their words, I created the song below:

The Phoenix

Verse 1:

At the beginning, there was warmth and joy and love

A sacred promise, this is what we’re made of

A blossoming, impossible to change or stop

Peace for all was the principle on top

Chorus:

But somehow we forgot

Moved away from that sacred spot

Resurrection is our due

Find the Phoenix inside of you

Verse 2:

Daffodils raise to the sunshine in hope

That thrives around us, embraces all the greatness in our scope

Awash, renew, believe you know the path to grow again

It’s all about the living– transformation, not a win

Chorus:

But somehow we forgot

Moved away from that sacred spot

Resurrection is our due

Find the Phoenix inside of you

I sang the song a capella the day that we created it in March. My partner, a music producer, composed music accompaniment for the song and I will be performing it again with the music on May 5. Join me for the total song debut! Click here for more information about the Center for Spiritual Living and service on Sunday, May 5th.
